On September 9th, I was unfortunate enough to be cast with the responsibility to photograph the Gallagher show in Leach Theater. I was expecting an entertaining, if hackneyed show from the Gallagher, but what followed was nothing more then schoolboy teasing followed by mindless stupidity.

I think what bothered me more then anything about the show was that, in addition to Gallaghers unique brand of off kilter observational humor, which I don’t mind, I just don’t find funny, he had a healthy smattering of mean jokes made at the expense of audience members.
Now, a lot of you may be saying, “It’s a comedy show get over it.” Normally I would agree, I’ve been to a lot of stand up shows, and been made fun of a good many times and laughed it off. The event that sticks out in my mind as being the worst of the evening, is when he made fun of a ten year old girl for being overweight. At one point he asked if she hated butter, then poking her in the stomach quipped “Obviously not.”  At another point he actually said to the girl “This is why girls don’t have dicks.” While saying this at a show with children present is acceptable, if a little lewd, saying to a little girl on stage is borderline sexual harassment in my book.
Then the last part of the show, which is the part everyone wants to see, the smashing things. Maybe this was interesting back in the day when Gallagher was popular, I just think its stupid.
It seems to me that Gallagher is an older man who is bitter about the fact that he is, and always will be known for smashing things with a  big hammer.  Several times during the show he made comments about not wanting to be remembered for smashing things. I would say that he long ago lost any possibility of that.
Gallagher, though entertaining at times, is on the whole just a mean guy with a hammer. I guess he has his place in history, but it makes me sad that so many people wasted their time and money supporting someone like that.

I don't know why you are so upset about him interacting with the audience, most comedians don't invite people on stage, or throw stuff out to the audience, etc... I think that the show was worth the money I paid for my tickets. Yes, some of what he did got a laugh at the expense of others, but at the beginning of the show he said he was going to make fun of everyone by the end of the show. Don't say "Oh, I feel sorry that people spent $39-$49 on tickets just to see some old crabby guy make fun of a little girl" he made fun of the college students that were on stage more than he did the little girl. He encourages flash photography at his performances, how many comedians do that? He's a good guy, he just made you mad.
