JOFFROI HOLOCOMBE - The UMR football team is hopeful for a promising season. With the addition of transfer Joe Winters and several incoming freshman, the season looks to be an extremely successful one. The next game will be against Southeast Missouri State University on Saturday, September 9 at 6 p.m. Unfortunately the Miners did not have a game this past Labor Day weekend, so this article will be covering the Miners’ schedule and signings. Last year the Miners finished with a 7-4 record, giving them their first winning season since 1985. This will only be their second season playing as a NCAA Division II independent since UMR moved into the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The GLVC does not recognize football as one of its sports. Not only did they beat seven teams, two of them happen to be top ranked NCAA Division 1-AA teams. The Miners are hoping for better results this year as they compete for a first-place finish. Even though the Miners started the season off with a loss, they have a long season left with ten games remaining. With only three of these games out of state, the Miners will be here in Missouri for seven of their games, five of which will be played right here at Allgood-Bailey Stadium. One key night this season will be the Fort Leonard Wood appreciation night, which will be held on October 14th. September 30th is a threefold of games, where we will be celebrating family weekend, hall of fame night, and the first home game of the season. Last season, the Miners put up some pretty impressive numbers to finish off the season. As a team, the Miners outscored their opponents 379 to 285, while averaging 34.5 points per game. Continuing with the trends in years past, the Miners went to the air accruing 3601 yards passing with a 57% completion percentage, which accounted for 75% of the total season yardage. The year ended completing 815 plays, 533 of these coming from passes with only ten interceptions. These numbers were mainly contributed by Evan Grey, who will not be returning this year. The Miners’ next game will be held at Southeast Missouri State University on September 9th in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Do not forget about the first home game against St. Joseph’s University on September 30th at 6:30 pm. |
