Freshmen Tyrone Davidson assisted the Miners in their first GLVC win of the season. The game ended with a final score of 85-71. The team will compete again on Tursday, December 7 at 7:30 p.m. against Rockhurst University.
Putting last year behind them by winning more games than in their previous season in only a five game period, the Miners are on the brink of a succussful season. Last year the Miners finished 2-23 while this year they are already off to a 4-3 start.
Stepping it up over the last couple of games the Miners finished this past game with an outstanding 51.8 percent shooting average, and with five players in the double figures.  The Miners beat their first Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent, Indianapolis, 85-71 this past week at the Multi-Purpose Building.
With both teams starting out strong, the Miners stood out as they started off with a nine point drive.  Yamani Ball sank two free throws early on to extend the Miner lead to 11-2.  Not more than three minutes later UMR widened the gap to 15 points thanks to Justin Taylor.
UMR maintained its double figure lead for most of the half, at times as much as 19 points ahead.  Relaxing with this lead the Miners were caught by surprise and gave away eight points to end the half at 41-30.
Indianapolis was able to close the gap by way of Braxton Mills 10 seconds into the second half.  This lit a fire underneath the Miners and they scored 11 of the next 15 points in the game.  A few minutes later a basket was made by Casey Noll and the lead was up to 22 points, 63-41, and Indianapolis was done for as they could not get closer than 11 points after this.
Noll led the Miners with 19 points from the floor and six for seven shooting with eight rebounds.
Tyrone Davidson also kept it going as he recorded his second straight double-double going 18 points and 14 rebounds.  The remainder of the five players in the double figures were Ball with 18, Taylor with 16, and Shardo for 10.
Finally able to put their three point game to work, the Miners made eight of 18 as well as going 19 for 23 from the free throw line.
This win broke a 28 game conference losing streak as the Miners had lost eight games while still part of the MIAA and all 19 conference games last year as well as one this year.
The Miners will return to action Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. game in Kansas City, Mo., against Rockhurst.
