Did you happen to see anyone running around campus in a costume on Sunday? Literally running? On a sunny day with unseasonably warm temperatures, sixteen runners and seven walkers competed in M-Club’s second annual “Revenge of the Nerds” 5K walk/run complete with costume contest. All the participants were invited to wear a costume during the race, however only about five people did. One person had a black cape flowing behind him, while another participant ran with a pair of fairy wings. The winner of the costume portion, junior Bo Bayles, dressed like a pirate complete with a red bandana, a skull and cross-bones on the back of his shirt, and an eye patch. “I had [the eye patch], but it wasn’t on,” said Bayles explaining what he did with the eye patch during the race. “I like depth perception.” For his costuming efforts, Bayles received gift certificates to Slice of Pie and Lee’s Chicken. The top three female and male finishers also received prizes. In the men’s category, “Robbie” came in first with a time of 17:02, Bayles took second at 18:03, and Mark Spaw came in third with a time of 18:45. Danielle Lyman came in first in the women’s category with a time of 22:08, Joanna Kovarik was second with 22:57, and Stephanie Schmucker took third with a time of 24:19. The money raised from the 5K will benefit the Rolla Optimist Club. The Optimist Club, whose motto is “Friend of Youth,” sponsors soccer, baseball, basketball, and tennis teams for local kids as well as puts on spelling bees and gives scholarships to graduating seniors from the local high school. “The Optimists Club benefits the youth of the community,” said BJ Cooksey, president of the club. “We really appreciate M-Club for helping to contribute. It’s a very worth-while cause.” According to Kandi Wieberg, the Vice President of M-Club and director of the 5K, although there were about the same number of participants as there were last year, she was positive. “I think we had a little more diverse group this year,” said Wieberg, referring to the fact that they attracted more individuals this year instead of all the participants just coming from the same group, which is what happened last year. All in all, there were about thirty people total who contributed to this year’s “Revenge of the Nerds” 5K walk/run by either participating or just buying a shirt, and Wieberg estimated that about $250 was raised for the Optimist Club. |
