Basketball season is getting ready to start, and after last season’s 2-25 performance, the GLVC has given the Miners a last place in the pre-season ranking for the upcoming 2006-2007 season.
After not winning a single conference game last year, in their first season as part of the GLVC, the Miners only received ten points in the pre-season coach’s poll.  UMR came in just behind Missouri-St. Louis who was only one point ahead of the Miners and also five points behind Rockhurst, who is tabled to finish fifth according to the poll.
Southern Indiana, after receiving three first place votes, has been picked to win the GLVC West this year. The four teams that finished last season tied, were picked to finish in their respective spots again.
This year’s second place pick, although beating Southern Indiana last year for the win, is Southern Illinois-Edwardsville who won last year’s Great Lakes Regional final.
In the GLVC East, Northern Kentucky received six of the seven possible first place votes to put them at the top of the East.  In second, third and fourth place respectively were Wisconsin-Parkside, Kentucky Wesleyan and Bellarmine in the division

The GLVC East was rounded out by Lewis University, Indianapolis and defending conference champion Saint Joseph’s, who graduated all of it’s starters from last year and enters this season with a new head coach.
After finishing last season with a 2-25 record, UMR opened practice a few Sundays ago.  The Miners first game will be exhibition games against Arkansas State on November 1st and against Mizzou November 3.
The home opener is set to be against Rhema Bible on November 15th.
UMR has a package available for those who wish to attend the exhibition game against Mizzou. For just $20, a fan can get a ticket and a ride on an awesome bus to the game at Mizzou Arena on Friday, Nov. 3. The bus will leave at 4 p.m. from the south parking lot at the Gale Bullman Multi-Purpose Building and will drop the fans off at the door of the arena. Fans can return to the bus at the same location following the game.
The fan bus will be available to the first 57 people who sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis at the UMR athletics office.
