| Lady Miners say goodbye to their senior class and a 2006 season of ups and downs |

 The Lady Miners soccer team will reluctantly lose seniors Maggie Thompson, Stephanie Schmucker, Brittany Parker, Emily O’Nan, and Danielle Lyman this season. The team hopes to capatalize on the performance and leadership of the five in the upcoming 2007 season. The team finished the season with a 4-12-1 record for the season, and 3-8-1 in the GLVC; a performance that ended them in tenth place in the conference. The 4-12-1 record does not do this team credit however. In their first game of the season, a 2-1 loss in double overtime against Central Methodist, the Lady Miners gave up two goals off penalty kicks and had many shots go off the goal bars throughout the game. That type of shooting would resemble the entire season for the Lady Miners, a little bad luck and too many shots off the goal post. The bad luck would go on for ten games before the Lady Miners were able to pull off a 0-0 tie with Drury. Also, through those ten games the Lady Miners had a seven game streak without a goal and were shut out 11 times over the season. So the first 13 games of the season were very tough times for the Lady Miners, but anyone who was at the games would agree, this team was much better and just could not put it together on the field. The Lady Miners did not play all bad. There were many up notes for them. The defense for the Lady Miners was one of the top in the league and senior goalie Brittany Parker did earn first team all-conference for the season. As for the offensive side of the team, let us look at the last five games of the season. For a team that had lost 12 of its 13 games, you would think that would be it, but this team would not be denied what it was due. The Lady Miners scored a total of 11 goals in the final five games, that’s six times the number of goals scored in the first 13; a mark that would help them win four of those five games. The last five games really represent what this team was all about and unfortunately, it only happened in the final five games. But the season closing will give the team some extra momentum going into the next season and it was also a great way to say good bye to the seniors. So although the season was a losing one, it was not a total loss. Look for the Lady Miners to dominate the GLVC in it’s second year of play. |
