Miner’s season ends with a loss to Wisconsin-Parkside Print E-mail

It has been a rollercoaster ride this past week for Miner soccer. After a 1-1 tie against Truman State, the Miners were ousted from the GLVC tournament after a first round loss, 2-3 against Wisconsin-Parkside.
In a fierce non-league game, the Miners faced off against Truman State seeking revenge for last year’s 2-0 loss. After a sluggish first half dominated by the Truman Bulldogs, the score settled at an uneven 1-0 start when Truman’s Matt McCarthy snuck one past UMR goalie Mike McNamee. The second half began with renewed vigor as the Miners out shot Truman 21-9 including 12 shots that made their way to the net. It seems as though the pressure on Truman’s goalie was too much as Brandon Moore was able to use the Miner dominated 2nd half to his advantage, rocketing a score-tying goal past the Bulldogs’ goalie.

With only 45 minutes of regulation play left within the second half, the Miners kept the pressure building on the Truman defense. Even though the Miner offense dominated the remainder of the second half, regulation time drained from the clock as the teams were forced into an overtime tiebreaker. Unfortunately, the 20 minutes of extra play did not give the Miner squad the time required to break the tie as the game ended with a 1-1 score in overtime. Even though the team feels as though they should have won the match, it is still commendable that the team bettered last year’s loss.
As the first round of the GLVC tournament began this past weekend, the Miners were poised to make their mark bettering last years performance. During first half of the Miner’s game against GLVC rival Wisconsin-Parkside, it seemed as though UMR would be a force to reckon with during this year’s tournament play. Unfortunately, the 2nd half proved to be the game breaker for the Miner squad, ending their tournament dreams within the first round.
The first half began with both teams flip-flopping control of the ball until UMR was able to clinch a late period goal when Brandon Moore assisted a shot off the foot of Miner Will Kirby. Moore proved instrumental to the Miners as he then scored two minutes later with the help of an assist of Justin Lightener. The first half closed with UMR up 2-0 and momentum rolling in their favor. The Miners could smell the second round of the tournament with only one more half standing in their way of advancement.
Wisconsin-Parkside came out fighting at the half, scoring two quick goals at the 50 minute mark, tying the score and putting the Miners advancement in jeopardy. For 17 more minutes, both teams fought to gain control of the game. The last minutes of the match proved fatal for the Miners as Parkside made a last minute advance and ending up scoring a pivotal goal bringing the score to a final 3-2.
The Miner Soccer team finished their season with a 9-9-2 record and is looking on to next season as they try to claim their rightful place within the GLVC.
