The smell of coffee and donuts wafts down the stairway as half-awake students wander into the ECE lobby. Students are milling around, chatting, and reading papers while sipping coffee and hot chocolate and munching on donuts bought from the small card table at the south end of the lobby. A sign hangs on the table, advertising the goodies for twenty-five cents each as well as “Hospitality and Conversation- Free of Charge.” It’s just another Friday at the ECE Coffee Shoppee. The Coffee Shoppee has become a weekly tradition at the Electrical and Computer Engineering building. No one can quite agree on how long the coffee shop has been as going on, but the general consensus is that it has at least been a couple of years. The shop is put on every Friday from 8-11 a.m. by HKN, the Electrical and Computer Engineering Honor Society. This year, Radhica Kaur, a senior in computer engineering, is the Tour Chair of HKN and therefore in charge of the Coffee Shoppee. just a way to give people food.” “This is really like a service project,” explained Kaur. “We don’t make a lot of profit, and if we do it goes to buy parts for labs and things.” Milk, orange juice, tea, hot chocolate, glazed chocolate frosted donuts, regular glazed donuts, and Honey Buns can all be bought for twenty five cents each. Coffee is fifty cents. “It has diversified quite a lot,” said Gavin Jones, a grad student in electrical engineering who occasionally volunteers to work a shift at the shop. “It used to be just milk, orange juice and donuts.” A general survey of the customers found that while coffee and the regular donuts are well-liked, by far the most popular item is the chocolate frosted donut. “Days when we run out of chocolate are really bad,” said senior Andrew Meintz with a grin. Most of the customers are electrical and computer engineering majors who faithfully stop by the ECE lobby every Friday. “I just walked by and saw it one Friday,” said Trey Caldwell, a senior in electrical engineering, who says he has been coming every Friday for two years. “Judging by the number of donuts we go through, I’d say probably sixty plus [come by],” said Jones, who also said that figure doesn’t even include those who just buy coffee or juice. So, if you’re looking for a way to start your Friday off on the right foot, stop by the ECE Coffee Shoppee in the ECE lobby between 8 and 11. Celebrate the end of the week and enjoy some almost-free breakfast goodies and some conversation or relaxation while taking a break in the lobby. “It’s more of a service than a money-making thing,” said Jones. “It’s |
