The Miners’ rough start sticks with them mid season as they barely lose to Southwestern Oklahoma State 31-29. The Miners now find themselves 2-4 for the year. Missed opportunities seem to be the downfall as they not only missed a red zone chance, but also had two of their kicks blocked. Despite the score, UMR came out strong and scored within the first three minutes after a 70 yard drive. This opening possession touchdown came as senior quarterback Joe Winters completed five passes and once again found Ashton Gronewold in the endzone for a nine yard scoring pass. The Miners kept their lead until the second quarter. Southwestern Oklahoma tied the score after an eight yard pass from Jimmy Sangster to John Haggerty. This did not slow UMR down though as they came back to score another touchdown. This touchdown came as Winters hit Brandon Landry for a 32 yard pass. Going for the PAT Tim Valencias kick was blocked leaving the score 13-7. This blocked kick was the start of the Bulldogs comeback to give them an 11 point lead. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game when Patrick Weaver ended an 80 yard drive with a 13 yard rush for a touchdown. They scored again with 30 seconds left in the half as they blocked a Miner punt and capitalized with a 29-yard field goal by Spenser Daniel. With the start of the second half, the Miners got a defensive stop and drove down to Southwestern Oklahoma’s five yard line. Continuing with the bad luck, the Miners were penalized twice for illegal procedures, leaving UMR to go for a field goal. Valencia missed his 32 yard attempt turning the ball over to the Bulldogs. Once again taking advantage of Miner mishaps, the Bulldogs drove for another 80 yards ending in a 22 yard touchdown pass to Beau Dodson. This brought the Bulldogs to 24-13 over the Miners. UMR made its move for the win as it held the Bulldogs on their next attempt and then continued by scoring the next nine points. These points came from Valencia’s 39-yard field goal and a nine yard touchdown pass to Landry. Unable to complete the two point conversion UMR was left at 24-22 with ten minutes left in the game. Southwestern Oklahoma started to play the clock and wasted 5:45 on its next scoring drive that went for 57 yards cushioning their lead. Both teams went three-and-out on their next possession, then the Bulldogs used up 5:45 on a 57-yard scoring drive to build a two-possession lead. The Miners came back again as they went for 80 yards in just over a minute bringing the score within two again, 31-29. With less than a minute to go the Miners tried for an outside kick, but were unable to recover allowing the Bulldogs to run the rest of the clock out. The Miners will be at home for their next three games, with their first being this Saturday at 1:00 p.m. against Austin Peay. |
