That Burns My Sass Print E-mail

Walking around on campus can be as exciting as walking into a dorm room with every entertainment system since the invention of “in-television”.  The buildings on campus have a sort of grace about them and seem to be constantly evolving with the times.  Take a look at the Rolla building and the Havener Center.  These are buildings that were built over a hundred years apart and yet still appear to have their place on campus.  Why is the campus expanding across Highway 63 when the emphasis should be on building up what we already have?  It seems to be dangerous to have students crossing Highway 63.

Walking into the second “mall” of our campus is a different story however.  The HSS building could quite possibly be, the ugliest building on campus.  I think the rooms were designed by a fourth grader with no grasp of functionality.  The basement room with the stage and the hideous blue chairs is a great example of just slopping something down on paper and calling it good.  Who really wants to be taught while sitting in bleacher seats?  That stage and its random crap, such as the big gray case a certain math teacher tossed on the floor a couple years ago, really make the stage feel cluttered.  Hard plastic might be the most uncomfortable thing to sit on in the world.
The Computer Science building must have the thermostat set to 145 degrees at all times.  It could be the first day of class in August or December 15th and you will want to pull your hair out because of the heat.  Perhaps it is the 45 students crammed into a room made for 25 or maybe all of the computer that are constantly running or maybe just poor insulation when the contractor that built the building cut corners to make the super tight budge the school was under.  McNutt looks like a bomb shelter.  It is the home of the School of Mines and Metallurgy and thus wants to appear rock solid.  I guess it is not the worst building in the world, I kind of like being able to walk under the second or main floor of the building.  Is it the only building with dark bricks on that side of campus though?  The rooms in McNutt are also dungeon feeling and maybe were like that on purpose.  Maybe the basement and its never ending hallways were the intent of the architect.
When driving into our campus from Highway 63 the first thing you see is the smoke stacks.  This giant smoke stack is boring and plain, we should paint it and write UMR on it.  I don’t think it would be a big hassle if we did this, I mean this could be a way to show our pride for our school for everyone to see.  The Physics building and IDE building have a huge gap between them and could be better utilized.  I realize there is a master plan for the university and it can be seen on the website, but I guess I don’t have the same vision as the University planners.
When the Havener was first being constructed they had cameras set up to watch the progress as well as the Residential College.  I think this would be an excellent idea to do for the Mechanical Engineering building.  Teachers in the construction classes could show parts of the video to the students as a teaching tool as well as students could watch in order to gain knowledge of how buildings are constructed and the how the different crews work on the buildings.
