The girls were hosting St. Joseph’s this weekend in a Sunday double-header.  The ladies knew they needed a sweep to land them a higher seed for the upcoming GLVC tournament and they were able to do just that.
Early on, the girls were powered by their seniors, a rousing salute to the Senior Day festivities; however, as the day wore on, Missouri S&T’s depth proved to be their strength as contributions from underclassmen helped to fuel the sweep.
The girls were able to pick up game one after a 2-2 tie-breaking, five-run sixth giving the Miners a decisive 7-2 victory.  This was all an ode to their ability to hit the ground running.  From the start, the girls strung together multiple-hit series.  In the first, the Miners earned back to back to back hits as Kandi Wieberg, Rachel Wilkinson and Kelsey Musselman all connected.  Then after Kassi Deibert grounded out, a Katie Smith single pushed up a score of 2-0 for the Miners; the Pumas responded in-kind in the third knotting-up the whole game at 2-2.     Then, in the sixth, starting with a Privett error, Becca Kueny reached.  Becky Davis then found her way to first off an infield single, and another Privett error gave Allison Plummer’s bunt new life and loaded the bases.  Then Wieberg, a senior in her last home game, hooked a shot into center and let slip the flood gates as the tie game was broken.
Privett was able to get Wilkinson to hit into a fielder’s, but right after that, Musselman belted one out of the park for a grand slam.  The knock was her 13th HR this season, tying the single season record of Holly Weinberg from two years earlier.  Jen O’Hara pitched the win for Missouri S&T, allowing only five hits and striking our four as she improved to 11-7.  Wieberg, Wilkinson, Musselman and Kueny, the four seniors on the team, combined for eight of the team’s 11 hits.
Game two continued the Miner victory movement as the girls again struck first, tagging Somogyi for a pair of runs in the third.  After Davis reached on a walk with one out and was moved over via a sac bund, a Wieberg double drove her in.  Wieberg then stole home on an errand throw that missed the third baseman and then she blitzed home to give the Miners a 2-0 advantage.
The Pumas struck back in the fourth making it 2-1 then in the sixth, they picked-up the lead as Privett drove in the tying run and a wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score.  Missouri S&T didn’t stay behind for long though, as Wilkinson led off with a double and was then driven in by a Musselman single.
Davis was able to reach on a bunt and then a Plummer hit third-base side left the Pumas with no play.  Somogyi struck out two and then walked Musselman to load the bases.  And Drage who followed Musselman, battled Somogyi for 15 pitches, fouling off 11, and then finally grounding a single through the gap to drive in the scoring run and win the game 4-3.  The sweep set the Miner’s as the third ranked team in the GLVC tournament earning them a game against 6th ranked Rockhurst this week.  That is all for now though Miner fans, so meet me back here next week for all the highlights and scores.  Take care, and as always, go Miners!
