The Missouri University of Science and Technology managed to split the doubleheader they played against the Hawks of Quincy University this past weekend. Since both teams are fighting for a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, there should be some promising competition in the weeks to come.
The Miners ended the second day of games in third place behind Drury, putting them in the last guaranteed playoff spot out of the GLVC West. This is two positions behind the Cougars of Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville.
The Miners were off to a great start in game one with a 7-0 advantage by the fourth inning, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring twice and then five times, in the second and fourth innings, respectively. They earned their first run in the second inning, on an RBI double from sophomore, Brandon Cogan who scored when freshman Kyle Boehm reached base on an infield hit and an error to follow.     Missouri S&T lengthened their lead two innings later when Cogan doubled on senior Eaf Redden, and Boehm followed on a two-run double bringing the score to 5-0. The sixth run came from senior, Gerad Fox after he completed a successful squeeze play, which resulted in an additional run off of a hit by freshman Zac Carter.
Quincy responded immediately with a pair of hits in the fifth inning and a couple of singles in the sixth and seventh innings, and made off the winning pitcher, sophomore Andrew Page. The Miners came back with two runs off the bat of Redden and teammate junior  Thomas McCormick.
Page contributed to the win with ten hits total over almost seven innings. Junior  Danny Trenner managed his first save with almost two and a half innings of scoreless relief. The team totaled nineteen hits in game one, with everyone on the team lineup earning at least one hit. Carter and Cogan were the leading scorers with three each. The final score of the game was 9-4 in favor of the Miners.
The second game did not go as well, as the Hawks took a 2-0 lead in the first few minutes of the first inning. After some tug of war play through the next several innings, the Hawks secured the game with a jam in the seventh. Two Miner players were hit by pitches and the Hawks increased the lead to 9-7.
Senior, Yaimel Javier-Cury was the leading scorer for game two with three hits and two runs. McCormick trailed with two hits and Trenner took the loss in relief again. Holding an overall season record of 18-21 and GLVC record of 11-13, Missouri S&T will host Quincy again on Sunday, March 3 in a twinbill starting at noon. Please come out and support your Miners in their venture into the GLVC Tournament.
