KMNR rocks Rolla with Glitterball concert Print E-mail

On Friday April 18th, KMNR hosted their annual Glitterball concert featuring three relatively new bands: Disturbing Lou, The Tommy Andrews Band, and The Redwalls.
The night started off with Johnroy, John Steganski, Chris “Roight” Pohrer, and Karl of Disturbing Lou from St. Louis providing a spectacular mix of punk rock, ska, and bossa-nova., The sound was unique in the fact that their instrumentals were not continuous melodies of repetition, but had peaks of fast hard rock followed by a smooth flow of jazz. This particular style threw off those who were attempting to dance with the music, but all seemed to enjoy it and some were able to keep up with the band for a while. Just when you thought a square couldn’t be a circle, Disturbing Lou came in and blew that thought away, revealing a new ingenious reality.     Following Disturbing Lou was The Tommy Andrews Band from Kansas City, Kansas. They did a range of styles including blues, rock, and psychedelic. Probably the most amazing thing about this band was Tommy Andrews, the lead guitarist and vocalist. If you could imagine a child throwing around a toy could make good music, then you could have imagined Tommy Andrews. He was so well tuned with his guitar that he could play it behind his head, use a glass bottle to play the frets, or even play the frets with a rag in hand. At one point he even got off the stage, being equipped with a cordless monitor, and rocked out amongst the crowd. One performance was totally crazy; he did just about everything but break his instrument as the song continued and the guitar stayed on-note and on-key.
The Redwalls were the final group to perform at Glitterball. At first glance one would question whether John, Paul, George, and Ringo had not come back from some time-warp in the ‘60s to do a performance here in little ol’ Rolla, Mo. Not only did their attire remind you of the Beatles, but also their vocalization and the flow of the songs were very reminiscent of that group. Yet there was originality to the style of Logan, Justin, Andrew, and Rob’s music that had alternative written all over it. Their MySpace page indicates their music is a combination of Rock, Garage and Indie. However, if the Beatles would have been born a few more decades later, then they would have become the Redwalls –their modern-day equivalent.
When asked if he was enjoying the show, Mitchell Niehoff, who is involved in the Perfect 10 Improv group on campus, answered by saying, “Hell yeah!” Other students that I interacted with that night were spellbound and amazed at the artists’ feats.
Despite the fact that KMNR had hosted an excellent display of talent, I was really expecting more of a turnout. There were probably as many people there as there were at my senior prom and my high school only had about 60 students. Some were probably disappointed about the lack of booze at the event. Yet, in my opinion, there is an availability of booze every weekend, but it is not every day that some great live talent comes to Rolla and the admission is free. Basically what I’m saying is, if you get the chance, definitely catch Glitterball 2009 or check out these bands on the KMNR website at www.KMNR.org.
