Miner baseball team swept by USI Print E-mail
Written by Dana Narconis
The Missouri University of Science and Technology had an unfortunately unsuccessful weekend in the way of baseball. They competed against the Eagles of the University of Southern Indiana this past Saturday and Sunday. They were swept by USI after a 6-3 lead in the opener, and then defeated in the second game when the Eagles maintained an early lead throughout the entire game.
In game one, Missouri S&T jumped on the Eagles’ starter, Cory Julian, for a total of three runs in the first inning. They loaded the bases after an error on a sacrifice bunt and a couple of base walks. The Miners earned a third run in the first inning on an infield groundout by senior Yaimel Javier-Cury of Santo Domingo, D.R.     Immediately following, the Eagles managed a couple runs in the second inning by taking advantage of a few Miner errors. No pun intended. Missouri S&T responded to this quickly with a streak of three runs in the third inning. The streak was set into motion on an out by freshman and Perkins, Oklahoma native, Zach Carter. The next couple runs were score by senior of Gunter, Texas, Eaf Redden, on a throwing error, and freshmen Drew Davenport. Davenport’s run was made possible with hits by teammates Louie Joseph and Brandon Cogan, a freshman and sophomore, respectively.
Junior of St. Louis, Missouri, David Birkby, took that lead into the fifth inning, but the Eagles loaded the bases too quickly. The contest was brought to a tie off of a triple by Chad Werry. Junior of Anna, Illinois, Kyle Griffin, retired the initial two USI batters of the inning, but Caleb Ehmke tripled to put the Eagles in front. Unfortunately, the tying runs set up in the sixth and seventh innings were ineffective and the Miners came up short. Cogan earned the Miners three hits in the opener, and Carter had two with an addition of two runs batted in.
Game two of the weekend was a disappointing one for our Miners as well. The Eagles came out of the gates with extreme momentum, scoring four runs in the first inning alone. This put starting pitcher and senior of St. Charles, Missouri, Matt Campbell, in a tough position. USI’s next run was scored off of Wes Fink’s home run, which would be the only one of the game.
Missouri S&T’s offense was suffering and only managed to turn three double plays in the entire second game. The Miners only run was in the fourth inning when senior of Weyburn, Saskatchewan,  Gerad Fox, singled, stole second and earned a run on teammate and junior of Kingwood, Texas, Thomas McCormick’s, hit. The Eagles had several hits by P.J. Thomas and Shaun Larsen. Sadly, this was the end of the competition for the Miners.
Missouri S&T will compete again on this Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, April 11-13, at 2 p.m. against the University of Missouri – St. Louis. This will be a home game played on the fields behind the Gale-Bullman Multi-purpose building, so let’s get some support out their for our Miner’s baseball team!
