Cardinals sign Barry Bonds to 1-year, $6 MM deal Print E-mail
Written by Barry Bonds
On March 30, 2008, St. Louis Cardinals GM John Mozeliak signed 43-year-old outfielder Barry Bonds to a one-year, $6 MM contract, with an additional $1 MM in incentives possible.
The signing solidifies a formerly craptastic outfield for the Cardinals. The projected opening day outfield will feature Bonds (the best left-fielder ever) in left field, pitcher-turned-outfielder Rick Ankiel in center field, and slugger Chris Duncan in right field.
Bonds is projected to give the Cardinals 84 homeruns and 194 RBIs this year, playing hard in his contract year. His on-base percentage is estimated (by myself) to be around the .760 mark.
The record-breaking season by Bonds will hopefully make him look good despite all the negative press he’s been getting. Said Bonds on the subject: “Newspapers suck. &$!$ me, news writers.”
Bonds is expected to take over the role of team leader from first baseman Albert Pujols who, according to Bonds, is a “naturalistic amateur who’s probably older than I am.”
Bonds has reported to the Cardinals and has begun working out with the team. His teammates love him.
