Lady Miners’ amazing season ends Print E-mail

`    The Missouri University of Science and Technology women’s basketball team had their hopes of dancing into the Elite Eight dashed on Monday night. The Norse of Northern Kentucky gave the Lady Miners a little more than they could handle in this one and pulled out the 60-52 win. Norse center Cassie Brannan scored 16 of her game high 25 in the second half to help get Northern Kentucky over the hump. She only missed one shot all game and it was in the first half. Brannen ended up wining most outstanding player for the region for her efforts.
The Lady Miners fought hard but the shots just weren’t falling. Before the game was decided there were nine ties and nine lead changes. The Lady Miners only shot 34.5 percent from the field compared to 44 percent for the Norse.
The game ended what had been a record setting season for the Lady Miners. They finished with a record for most wins in a season at 24-7.     Early in the first half, the Lady Miners managed to pull out to an 11-6 lead, on a three pointer by senior guard Jaymi Forsberg, but a pair of Brannen free throws and a three pointer off a Brannan assist gave the game it’s fourth tie in just over seven minutes of play. Shortly after MST managed to sneak out to a four point lead, but Brannen answered back as she did seemingly all game long. Her three sparked a run that saw the Norse jump out to a six point lead, but just before half time a pair of free throws from senior guard Chism McEntire and a lay in from junior forward Tamara McCaskill knotted the game back up at 25.
Out of the gates in the second half Forsberg nailed another three, but saw it answered shortly there after to tie the game again. After trading baskets for a couple of possessions the Miners slipped out to a five point lead, but again Brannen came back. She hit a pair of free throws and after a Norse jumper cut the lead to one she got to the line for two more to put the Norse up one.
Less than a minute later, senior forward Katie Bunge converted an old fashioned three point play to put the Lady Miners back up two. Ten seconds later though, Brannen converted another lay up of her own to tie the game for the last time. On the ensuing MST possession Brannen came up with a steal that led to two Norse free throws. Northern Kentucky closed out the game hitting their free throws down the stretch. By game’s end they had shot 18-20 from the line.
For the Miners Bunge ended her career in a Lady Miners uniform with a triple double. She recorded 15 points and 11 rebounds. Forsberg also went down swinging in her final appearance with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists with only one turnover. Bunge and junior center Katie McElrath were among those named to the all tournament team.
For the Ladies, especially the seniors Jaymi Forsberg, Jennifer Pena, Josie Polk, Chism McEntire, and Katie Bunge, if you see them around campus be sure to congratulate them on a great record breaking season and say thank you for representing this school and campus in the best possible way.
The Lady Miners will definitely be ready be ready to even have a more amazing season next year.
