The Missouri S&T Track team had an impressive showing this past weekend as they raced with the best that the Missouri Central Invitational had to offer. Highlighting the meet were MS&T freshman newcomer Brandon Etzold on the track and the ever strong Jordan Henry in the polevault. Etzold raced the mile, 600 and 4x400, putting up impressive times in each. Etzold put on one of the most exciting performances of the day as he grasped first place in the “mile showdown” between himself and his freshman teammates Brendan Smith and Allen Ernst. Etzold ran a solid 4:24, closing in a 29 second 200 to win the event. Ernst followed suit with a second place finish, closing with a 4:28 and Smith earned the right to a fourth place finish with a 4:29. Etzold, Ernst, and Smith have all shown great foot speed over the past year and the trio will prove to be a force to be reckoned with at the upcoming conference meet. The 3000 meter was just as exhilarating as Joffroi Holcombe battled for winning position. Holcombe, who had been violently ill the entire week before the race, was unsure of the type of performance he could garner in his weakened condition. Amazingly enough, weakness never stepped up to the line at start of the race. Holcombe ran a solid race closing in 8:53 and coming in second overall. 8:53 is an excellent time for Holcombe considering his health issues previous to the race; MS&T fans can expect him to be down sub-8:40 by the time conference rolls around. The 600 saw some fast times from Etzold and Thompson as the two placed third and sixth, with a 1:16 and 1:18 respectively. Chris Teel and Paul Roland continue to improve in the 800 meter, as both ran 2:02. Teel and Roland will fine tune their legs as the season progresses and will be competitively under 2:00 towards conference time. The 400 meter dash is all about one man: Ian Packard. Running a solid 50.89, Packard clinched a second place finish and showed that he will be able to be a top GLVC runner this season. Thomas Sands was the next MS&T finisher with a 54.14. Packard followed up his performance in the 400 with the leading MS&T performance in the 60 meter dash. Packard finished with a time of 7.17 and Chuck Melton followed close behind with a 7.24. Jordan Henry hit the provisional mark in the pole vault with his eighth-place finish, clearing 15-6 1/4 in the meet. The Miners also got a tenth place finish from Jared Anders, who had previously reached the provisional mark; Anders cleared 14-10 1/4 as did Dan Hellwig to finish 11th. The Missouri S&T women’s track team also ran well at CMSU with a leading performance by Kt Bruce. Bruce won the 400-meter with a time of 1:00.72 and added a third place showing in the 200-meter in 27.32. She also finished eighth in the 60-meter with a mark of 8.29 seconds and was part of S&T’s 4x440-yard relay team that took third. The Lady Miners also had a second place showing from Sam Schussele in the 80-meter with a time of 2:36.88 while Kierra Handley finished in fifth place in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:31.34. Kendra Lewis placed sixth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.33 in the finals after she posted a mark of 8.25 in the preliminary round. The Lady Miners also got a eighth-place showing from Hannah Terwelp in the weight throw with a mark of 41-5; she also placed tenth in the shot put with a mark of 33-10 1/4. Hillary Griffith finished eighth in the 200-meters in 28.05 and ninth in the 60-meter with a time of 8.36 seconds, while Rebecca McNally was tenth in the 3,000-meter in 11:57.83, just ahead of teammate Teresa Conley’s mark of 12:02.85. |
