The University of Missouri-Rolla Lady Miners soccer team lost another game this past week, bringing their record to a disturbing 0-9-0 for the season and 0-4 in the conference. As a writer and a fan, it is disappointing to see such a talented team go through the same thing every week. It is like a kid who wants to hear the same bedtime story every night; the only difference is that the UMR faithful do not like the story we’re being told. With a new field to play on that has no losses to its name yet, the Lady Miners set their expectations high for their Wednesday game against Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Unfortunately for the Lady Miners, the Cougars had other ideas on their minds. The SIUE Cougars scored the only points of the match. the goals were scored by Jenny Kates, who stole the ball and then went on a break away run to put the ball in the net in the 40th minute of play. The second was by Elizabeth Valenti, who nailed a shot from eighteen yards out in the 68th minute. Do not think the game was all SIUE though; the Lady Miners had countless opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net. The most notable were two shots that went off the cross bar and the goal post. In reality, the Lady Miners played really well. Unfortunately, they were just very unlucky when it came to finding the goal. This is something the SIUE Cougars did not have a problem with. The Lady Miners went to 0-9 and 0-1 on there new field. The Lady Miners were also scheduled to play a game this past Friday against Lewis University (who hold a 2-7 season record and an overall of 1-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) at 7:30 p.m., but Mother Nature had other plans. The game was cancelled due to rain. There is a chance the game may be rescheduled sometime in October. This was very upsetting to many of the girls because they really thought that this was going to be a solid win for the team. It might have given us some momentum for the rest of the season. We’ll let you know if the game is rescheduled at a later date. The Lady Miners played a game on Sunday Sept. 24th at 2:30 p.m. and their next home game is against Drury on Friday Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m. Drury is a rival GLVC opponent, so let’s have a large home crowd for this game. |
