Paintings, photographs, and even china vases were revealed this last Thursday in the Writing Center, attracting students, professors, and locals alike. “Inspired by Writing,” the third art show of its kind, was hosted in the Campus Support Facility near the Havener Center. While the department has always been around to help students with writing, it sought out to bring more of a different climate,  and as Kate Drowne, Director, explained: “We wanted to do something more.”
The Missouri Miner/RAMESH CHEMBETI
The Inspired by Writing show accepted pieces from UMR students and the Rolla community.
Thus, the first “Inspired by Writing” art show was born in 2003. It accepted then what it does now: any piece of art, from anyone in the area. The show’s only condition was that the piece was inspired by writing, such as a book, poem, or song. Which such slack guidelines, it is easy to see why it was a success. When the second show came again in 2005, there was such a confident response that the show changed from once every two years to annually, reminding all of Rolla how important liberal arts can be. This year, photos of horses, paintings of the ocean, and a miniature train were some of the many pieces revealed at the reception, where food and refreshments were passed out, creating a friendly, open atmosphere as guests chatted.
Dr. Drowne commented on how proud she is that the center can provide such a productive, positive outlet, and is happy to see, “professors, staff members, and students who otherwise might never meet each other come together to discuss what they love about art.” With so few of those on campus who are ‘artsy’ in some way, having an event like this is really important for those who want responses, comments, and critics for their own form of expression.
More importantly, doing something creative, such as reading, writing, or drawing can be relaxing, as it lets the right side of the brain work while the left can rest. Such activities can be a wonderful way to escape the world of math and science, both predominate at UMR. In fact, doing something creative once a day is recommended by many. Be it cooking or sculpting, expression can take many different forms.
This year, artwork is being shown in rooms 103 and 104 in the Writing Center, and it will continue to be displayed until after Thanksgiving. Until then, feel free to drop on by.
