The city council met this Monday. To begin the agenda were re-zoning requests. These included areas in Martin Springs Drive, Rolla Park, Buehler Park and West Highway. All the rezoning requests were approved. During the Open Citizen Communication, the council discussed harnessing wind energy in the city of Rolla. Rolla is recognized by the United States Geographical Survey as a good resource of winds. The council discussed at length the proposal to utilize wind energy. There was a motion by Building Codes Administrator Brian Epstein for Nuisance Abatement at 406, West Highway 72 owned by Don Ratzlaff of Salinas, Kan. The residence is in a state of disrepair, overgrown lot and a general unsafe condition about the property. There was a recommendation to demolish the structure as the owner was unresponsive even after several notices. There was also concern shown about other properties in Rolla lying in a state of disrepair. The council recognized fund problems in demolishing these houses and opened the topic for debate in search for better a solution. The council decided to sell a Surplus Radio Tower on eBay, the electronic auction service. The rusting 185 foot structure is located in the downtown business district, but it is adjacent to the new 911 tower, so it was becoming a hazard. The city is going to make $1025 on the deal. “The city was looking at having to pay someone to tear it down,” City Administrator John Butz said. “We thought we’d take a shot and offer it on eBay.” City Council also approved the purchase of two, 2004 Missouri Highway Patrol used Crown Victoria cruisers for $12,250 each. |
