UMR’s baseball team contended the Eagles of Southern Indiana Print E-mail

Hello there Miner faithful; time again for us to review all the highlights of the previous week from our beloved Miners.  On Tuesday, out in Evansville, Ind., the Miners fell to Southern Indiana with a final of 9-8, and the Eagles clinching the victory in the bottom of the ninth off a RBI single via the bat of Josh Malone.
Then, moving into the weekend, the Miners were able to pick up one of three in their series here at home against Indianapolis.
On Tuesday, the Miners picked up an early 7-0 lead in the first as the kids from UMR . . . oh, excuse me, Missouri S&T . . . slugged away at USI starter Aaron Clark.  Clark was hurt badly by his defense as the Eagles tripped all over themselves, committing five errors in that inning.
Unfortunately for the Miners, tough USI threw up seven runs of their own in the first three innings to tie the ball game.  The Miners were able to haul in another run in the fifth though to retake the lead and make it an 8-7 ballgame.  However, a pair of runs split between the eighth and ninth innings sent the Miners home with a 9-8 loss, ending a three-game road streak and putting UMR at 5-12 in GLVC and 12-15 overall.

Freshman Brandon Cogan assisted the Miners in their contention against Southern Indiana in Evansville this past week.
Heading into the weekend, the Miners came ready to play, opening up the weekend trio of games with a 3-2 victory powered by the bat of Eaf Redden who delivered a walk-off single in the ninth.
Game two was a different story, however, as the Greyhound bats rang with resounding force, spattering the score card with 12 ugly runs, handing the Miners a candid 12-2 defeat.  In the second game, the Miners mirrored the performance of the Eagles from earlier in the week, committing six errors over the course of the game contributing to the final deficit.
Then on Sunday, the Miners and the Greyhounds were back out on the UMR diamond to duke it out for the finale of the three game series.  Game three was more of the same, though, for a UMR team that had been plagued by errors the day before.  The errors were the margin of victory as UMR committed three errors allowing four runs to cross the plate in their 5-3 defeat Sunday.
After allowing two runs in the third, the Miners were able to rebound in the fourth to tie up the ball game.  However, Indianapolis threw up a crooked three spot in the fifth to push the Miners into a 5-2 hole.
Though they would cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth as a run found its way home, a runner caught stealing and a man stranded would be all that was left for the Miners as they closed out the contest and the weekend with a 5-3 final.
The Miners are now 6-14 in the GLVC and 13-17 overall.  The kids from Rolla will again be hosting a weekend set as Wisconsin-Parkside comes to town, and you can be sure that the guys will have plenty to show them.
I am not much of a gambling man, but I would have to say that I foresee the Miners pulling out of their little error-ridden spell to deliver some well deserved punishment of their own.  Look out for some gaudy numbers and solid Miner victories, folks.
So go out and support your team and, just in case you can not make it out there, you can be sure you’ll get all the scores and highlights right here next week.  So until then, have a good week and, as always go, Miners!
