The spectacle that is the NFL draft is over now. This year it started later and lasted half as long as the NFL enacted some measure to make the draft more fan friendly. Whether you watched it or not, your team now has some new faces to fill up the sidelines. First I’m going to run down some of the drafts biggest storylines then I’ll run give a run down on the local teams. The Miami Dolphins took some of the mystic out of the draft when they signed Michigan tackle Jake Long to a contract on Tuesday of the week leading up to the draft. Long signed a contract making him the highest paid offensive lineman in the league. While making a person that has not played a single down of football in the NFL the highest paid player in his profession is definitely debatable, taking an offensive lineman that allowed only one sack for the entirety of his senior year was a simple decision for the rebuilding Dolphins.

The girls were hosting St. Joseph’s this weekend in a Sunday double-header. The ladies knew they needed a sweep to land them a higher seed for the upcoming GLVC tournament and they were able to do just that. Early on, the girls were powered by their seniors, a rousing salute to the Senior Day festivities; however, as the day wore on, Missouri S&T’s depth proved to be their strength as contributions from underclassmen helped to fuel the sweep. The girls were able to pick up game one after a 2-2 tie-breaking, five-run sixth giving the Miners a decisive 7-2 victory. This was all an ode to their ability to hit the ground running. From the start, the girls strung together multiple-hit series. In the first, the Miners earned back to back to back hits as Kandi Wieberg, Rachel Wilkinson and Kelsey Musselman all connected. Then after Kassi Deibert grounded out, a Katie Smith single pushed up a score of 2-0 for the Miners; the Pumas responded in-kind in the third knotting-up the whole game at 2-2.

Henry, a junior who finished as the national runner-up during the indoor season in the event, cleared 16-8 to clear the automatic qualifying standard and earn a spot in the national meet next month in Pomona, California. Henry’s jump earned him a Missouri S&T school record and seats him third overall in Division II.

The Missouri University of Science and Technology managed to split the doubleheader they played against the Hawks of Quincy University this past weekend. Since both teams are fighting for a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, there should be some promising competition in the weeks to come. The Miners ended the second day of games in third place behind Drury, putting them in the last guaranteed playoff spot out of the GLVC West. This is two positions behind the Cougars of Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville. The Miners were off to a great start in game one with a 7-0 advantage by the fourth inning, sending ten batters to the plate and scoring twice and then five times, in the second and fourth innings, respectively. They earned their first run in the second inning, on an RBI double from sophomore, Brandon Cogan who scored when freshman Kyle Boehm reached base on an infield hit and an error to follow.
